noun - A governing body is either volunteer-driven associations or professionally administered sports organizations that has acknowledged and recognized regulatory and sanctioning functions. Governing bodies have a wide variety of responsibilities, missions, and scopes in the water polo community. They may cover a range of sport at a local, regional, national or international level. The first international federations were formed at the end of the 19th century.

FINA is the international governing body for the game of water polo.
